In 1999, May was declared as National Military Appreciation Month, a month-long observance that honors the sacrifices of the United States Armed Forces. For this reason, there are more military-related observances during the month of May than at any other time during the year.
Here are three ways to honor the following dates: Loyalty Day, VE Day, Armed Forces Day, Military Spouses Day, and Memorial Day. Check them out below:
Wear Clothing Supporting the Military.
If you have a loved one in the military, there’s no doubt that you’ve stocked up on t-shirts, hoodies, and sweaters, paying homage to their particular branch, whether it’d be the Marines, Army, or Coast Guard. So, this month, be sure to pepper plenty of those beloved wardrobe items into your everyday clothing selections. Even though many states are still under strict social distancing guidelines, you’ll have the opportunity to show off your military merch on your weekly grocery store run or daily walk/run.
Send a Care Package.
You can also show your care and concern for our soldiers and veterans by pairing with an organization to send a care package. You can send one directly from your home or even organize a collection drive within your community. Don’t think you have to sink a lot of cash into one either—most soldiers enjoy simple comforts, like favorite snacks, energy drinks, books, magazines, and more. You can even take it to the next level and plan a themed box!
Donate or Volunteer at Your Local VA Hospital.
Many of our current or former soldiers are fighting to regain some normalcy after returning home from long stints of duty. By donating items, such as blankets, new socks, or sweatpants, can make a person’s stay all the more comfortable. If you rather donate your time, there is always plenty of room for interested applicants. Most of the time you will just be spending time with the patients, escorting them to their appointments, serving them coffee, or simply providing companionship.
Not only do we take pride in providing our residents with high-quality living at Haven at Main Apartments in Houston, Texas, but we also believe that it is important to stay in touch. With our weekly tips and advice, we encourage you to stay connected with us.
