A quintessentially Texan combination of cheese, chiles, and spices, queso is one of the state’s most beloved dishes – and with good reason. There’s nothing more comforting than melted cheese paired with a big bowl of salty, crunchy chips and a cold margarita after a long week of work. The combination is so killer that you can find it at just about every Tex-Mex spot in the United States. Not to brag or anything, but we’d go as far as to say that TX is downright influential in that regard. With so many Tex-Mex selections around this great city of ours, however, where can you find the best queso, the appetizer, and topping that makes everything better, in H-Town? Read on to find our top 3 spots, courtesy of Haven at Main, which boasts 1 bedroom apartments in Houston.
Molina’s Cantina – 7901 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77063
In business since 1941, Molina’s is a Houston dining institution of sorts. When Raul Molina arrived in Houston from his hometown of Laredo, Mexico in the late 1920s, he worked his way up in the restaurant industry from a busboy and dishwasher to a counterman until he and his wife, Mary, were able to open their own spot. As a pioneer of Tex-Mex cuisine, it should come as no surprise that Molina’s Cantina has some of the best ooey-gooey queso in town! Molina’s specialty queso is called The Original “Jose’s Dip,” which consists of chili con queso blended with spicy taco meat. During Happy Hour, which runs from 2 PM to 7 PM on weekdays, diners can score free queso and chips alongside drink specials. ¡Olé!
Xochi – 1777 Walker Street, Houston, Texas 77010
If you’re looking to take your experience on the upscale side, then you’ll want to head to Xochi ASAP. As a part of the H Town Restaurant Group, Xochi celebrates the flavors of Oaxaca, Mexico as seen through the creative eyes of Chef Hugo Ortega and Beverage Director, Sean Beck. Xochi (pronounced: so-chee) pays homage to Xochitl, the Goddess of the Flowers, and their menu is totally on par with the otherworldly, including its Queso de Rancho, which is served with red huaxmole sauce, chicharrones, and a selection of roasted insects — an Oaxacan delicacy — for dipping. Yes, you heard us correctly. These aren’t your normal side of tortilla chips, so please come prepared for a walk on the adventurous side!
The Burger Joint – 2803 Montrose Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77006
You probably wouldn’t think of a Houston restaurant called The Burger Joint as a go-to spot to get your queso fix, but here, you can slather queso on any burger, hot dog, or order of fries. And, boy, does The Burger Joint have a wide – and utterly delicious – selection of burgers, including the Classic, Chili Cheese, Mushroom, and Impossible. Or, get a hot dog, sandwich, or chicken tenders, instead! Side selections are just as delectable with bacon-parm fries, onion rings, mac & cheese, and of course, the queso fries. But, remember, a side of queso can be paired with any menu item. And, a burger joint just wouldn’t be a burger joint without the classic shakes. Try the Peanut Butter, Cookies n’ Cream, or the Vietnamese Coffee.
